Wonderful! I really love the ants and the atmosphere.
Lovely painting!
The brain bug is a blast.

And the mantis....well it's getting obvious that you looked at them quite some more times than me, Jim.
Very cool.
I should probably take some references to help. But I didn't intend to do a real mantis. Seeing yours, they are much nicer than mine. Dear, evolution is the real artist!!

A dear friend once gave me one of those framed, giant, preserved insects. It was a type of scorpion without a tail. One day I took some time to look at it more closely and had this intense feeling of awe, joy and even pride for life and how it evolved into such massive variety into the smallest of details with elegance, function and complexity... all so much beyond our comprehension. Yep...that is art in perfection! :)

Love the brain bug, too, hahaha! ...looks great altogether! But I also see the troubles between working with and without reference. Our mind has to work very differently in those two disciplines and the effort of faith into oneself to work without reference is tragically amplified by any time reference had been used. I'm starting to get really scared of it, actually, hahaha, so I'll stay away from that for a while, I think. Except maybe some nude studies... :? ;)

I couldn't resist.

Inspired by vervings of borhani59. His/hers one special drawing grabbed my attention.
This relict creature is not quite-insect but it's not a bird either and is very small actually. It is forgotten to the history little beast.

This.

It came out of this. I thought that it shows some kind of creature depicted by some ancient eastern civilization's artists. His face from front-top orthographic projection.

Plus the "predator" sketch from the first doodles implanted itself into your subconscious, too, didn't it!?
(And I love that one from borhani!)

That went unnoticed to me
It certainly got some common elements that sneaked in.
I feel like been catched at cheating
