Uh, once you really get started with landscapes, you'll be hooked for a great while!
You could have a look at the typical concept design process of making atmospheric landscapes. I'm sure you'll found countless clips on youtube including my own first Verve Demo, of course, haha.
But yeah...there's a fun method to the madness which can provide you with years of fun doing those landscapes! :D

I do like your abstract approach, too! :)

Actually I had already viewed your tutorial after Spork posted a link at the Sculptris forum. (Watching the second time was more beneficial because I understood the controls better). I let Spork and Dreamz and whoever else know about verve in the off topic thread. They both complained about having a new program to learn and I haven't seen them since :D I am hoping they are lurking around honing their skills until they astound us with some brilliant display of artistry lol.

I like to explore and verve is perfect for that. I just wondered if I could create a passable landscape without resorting to a landscape program like Bryce or Vue and using a different approach. If Sidetrip didn't have the brown bottom layer, it wouldn't even hint at working and would instead be a blob of white hehe. I loved working with brushes 1, 8 and 9 and I can't help but think that in the hands of someone skilled they could make it look Photographic. As it is my version is rather rough.

It's too easy to take sidetrips in Verve :D

Well I'd say you're heading in a good direction. Just have fun and play around because the only way you can get better is by practicing a lot! ;)

That's true but I should be writing and instead find myself doodling! :D I guess it all balances out.

Tartan, that's a nice landscape! :D I kinda wish I could see more of that bottom with the ocean though. It would be epic.

I just tried DM. I took it to photoshop in its original resolution of 2560x1920 and increased the canvas size to 4000x3000 so I would have lots of room to paint by and well it went this way instead. I think there is a little bit of the grass from the original to the left. sigh. I wanted to see the beach!

Haha Tartan, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one that sometimes experience my own artwork as if it has its own mind and went in a different way than I originally intended it to go. :P But I think this turned out well too. It is like I'm standing in the grass field looking up at the approaching storm on the horizon. :D Good effort! Keep it up!

I really believe that is the mark of a true artist, when his/her creation becomes its own entity, hehe! :? 8-)
Wow, you go to such high resolutions for "room to paint"? Hmmm.... maybe it would be good for you to practice on small resolutions and so-called "thumbnails" to become master over your creation again and not have it slip out of your fingers so easily.

I really dig this last one, though. It's very dream-like, I think. ...or possibly drugs I wouldn't know about, haha! ...but pretty and oddly believable for sure!

Thanks guys. When I did the resolution thing, my thought was to place it directly center to extend the land formation out so I could see the end of it and further down the beach with proper waves and horizon and also down to the bottom of the formation. As I was working on it I realized I didn't like it. In fact the only thing I Did like about it was the divot on the end of the rock formation itself and the grass. Not even most of the green area but the top of the grass. It looked too controlled somehow, so I started pulling it around and let control go a bit and it wandered around as I tried to follow it. This morning I sat down to try and add light touches to it without destroying the feel and I stopped when I felt a train wreck coming. I like the first version better because of spontaneity but this was fun also.

On resolutions. It's a habit of mine to render in at least monitor resolution since the later 90s. Back then that was 1024x768 lol. I made the mistake in rendering a number of my earlier Bryce efforts in 480 because of the exceedingly long render times. Set scene up, start render, walk away for a few days and pray the power doesn't brown or black out :D They weren't the best of renders but I like keeping my mistakes as well as any small successes. 480 resolution is a poor choice when you want a better version. My very first render of another old character of mine Goth might be able to painted over if I blow it up enough. Hmm that could be fun. (Tartan kicks himself) Hmmmm Ouch! :D At any rate, as the years go by I keep getting better monitors and am working on a 30 inch dell monitor with 2560x1600 resolution. Me working in 2560x1920 in verve instead of native was just a whim. As long as I stay in my monitors native resolution I have not had problems but I constantly save png and vrv. 4000 gives me windows taking exception on vrv. On this particular computer build I am running I just don't have issues with gl etc and it is hell on wheels in a game ;) When Diablo 3 comes out with it's new content update I may disappear for a few weeks
(Tartan drops from exhaustion and excessive long windedness)
