Re: dba's not dead !
The truth is, as far as i'm concerned, my art is dramatically handicapped by my tendency to self-judgment. So as much as possible, I try to keep away from censorship issues and responsibility thoughts. And of course, I fail, mostly
it reminds me of a conversation with a shrink friend of mine, a woman who teached me not to feel guilty about porn pictures I draw for a magazine, years ago. Decades after doing them (with real pleasure, I confess) I was very embarassed about the sexism and macho vision that these drawings expressed . It was a very good experience to learn anatomy but, even if I managed to introduce some funny things, most of them where sad "clichés" of women as sextoys for men ...
The lady I was talking with told me something very important, I believe. She told me that the problem was not that men had fantasies about women and represented them with not very respectfull pictures. The problem was that ther was no room for women fantasies. Thoses pics where made by men for men. Done by women, it would have been quite different and interesting. Things changed a bit since then, women have a little taken possession of the land, thankfully. Not enough, however. But the message was something like : dont censor yourself and you will understand why you shouldn't censor anybody else. You can have fun with some visions as long as it's not a tool of domination but just a fantasie. If your representation of women make them unable to see themselves in another way, now that's a problem ! And the better way to fix this issue is not to ban your drawings but to let women supplement them by their own creations. So, yeah, in a way censorship is never the solution.
