Re: With verve into the light

Thanks for your help, taron.
I made some changes and tried to get the lips correct.
A few strokes more and I lost control of what happened.

Re: With verve into the light

YES, I agree, this result is AWESOME! c:! I like the fairytale feeling you got!

Without you Knacki, this forum will not be so nice as it is now! ..Same for you, Pilou!

..And regarding to your comment about blues.. I totally agree with your opinion.. Music can be good or bad, doesn´t matter of the style. Btw, I really like blues too.. Unfortunately, nowadays I cannot visit live concerts too much because I damaged my ears during my "young" age (discotheques, headphones at loud, a visit to very loud live J.M.Jarre concert etc..).

I wouldn't want to miss a single one of y'all! :)
Yep, if it ain't a classic elven beauty... very beautiful!
...with a slight touch of a warrior with that chin of hers, though. But who wouldn't want to feel safe by the power of his beloved!? 8-)

Re: With verve into the light

hey Knacki
Grats on top row! :D Going back a bit I like the gaze on rocker. It emotes very well and a good style :) rBack is a different style entirely and well done also. This man has seen much from behind his glasses. :ob Again neymar and a wonderful portrait. c:! Then we come to Johnny Lee. I think you have captured his spirit and look with an excellent display of color :D On your last I have to wonder if you are caught in the middle between masculine and feminine. I can see a case being made as to both genders. But that's typical of High Elves, Especially if they have been in Colorado. I think it's a wonderful sketch

Re: With verve into the light

Hey fellows ;)
Thanks a ton. You guys are sensational!
As time is too short to finish her like I would to, I started a "quickie".
It was thought to be one.
Very easy character.
Ended in endless iterations
Look at this crazy beginning. Maybe it's not a good idea to construct too much?
Result is not what I expected - but that's life.

Re: With verve into the light

Well, he's at the very least instantly recognizable, so... GREAT JOB! :ob
I find that in actual portraits the generic construction is only a mild helper. Developing a set of relationships of proportions is the most important. At the end it is those which really make us recognize a specific face. I think, I might've talked about it in my Spock posts...at least that was what I wanted to demonstrate.
When you see the progression of my sketch, Nimoy is pretty much recognizable from the coarsest line drawing. I went exclusively for proportions and didn't bother with any traditional construction except the raw form, maybe.
AH, found the post:Spock mini tutorial

Anyhow, how ever you got there, at the end he looks great! 8-)

Hah - was already there - but that was bothering me from very beginning I was away.
So for likeness I will start again with my eye - nose - mouth and then the rest approach :D

It's final target anyway, but one have to know how things are working together.
Constructing was not useless.

Re: With verve into the light

It's really the way you approach construction. As I said, a generic construction can only go so far and could send you off course, if you went too far with it.
Also, never work from the inside out like that, starting with eyes, nose or lips, this would never really work and will always have an awkward flavor. You start with the overall volume and shape of the head. Your knowledge of construction should help you to localize eye and eyebrow positions. Test those against the forehead or hairline. Actually it's wise to always keep checking distances to the head outline (cheeks, chin and all that). Then you measure in your eye the proportions of those to the nose, leave a hint for it and then continue on to the lips. If the eyes are that far apart and the nose is that far down compared to the distance of the eyes, how far does that put the lips down. Where to the wings of the nose sit in relation to the eyes and the corners of the mouth and so on... it's like wedging stuff in based on their relationships long, long, long before you even think about going at details.
Once this super rough placement sketch feels like the character you're after, you know you'll be on the right track. I wouldn't even proceed, if it didn't feel right. Sure, there is a margin, but you know what I mean.
For us to go at different ethnicity is actually yet another challenge, regardless as to how familiar we may are with any particular celebrity or so on... we may forgive certain deviations a little earlier than we should. But that's just a guess of mine, really.
What was your reference for Morgan Freeman?

Re: With verve into the light

I don't find the original one, as it was smaller.
I didn't want to loose myself in detail.
But here is a bigger one - the only one I find on the web:
