Why does reopening project have degraded look?

Hello.
Thank you so much for this wonderful program.
I found it while looking for impasto capabilities, nice thick paint, very nice.

I have a problem that maybe you can help me with.

I create a simple project with thick paint, save the project as .vrv, and save the image also as .png.
Everything looks great.

Then I open the project and it looks like the image quality is very much degraded.
When I save the image from the reopened .vrv just after opening it, with no changes,
the resulting .png is also a degraded in quality.

Any ideas for me to be able to reopen the .vrv and have it be just as I had saved it?

Thank you for any ideas to try.

Re: Why does reopening project have degraded look?

Hi, welcome to the forum, frew!
This is not degraded, but it looks to me like you were saving a png and then loading the png again?! When you load a png, it does not contain material build up, but only colors. These colors then get put on the canvas with a material amount of 1.0. As a result you will see the current canvas texture underneath it, which is what you're looking at there!

If you save a vrv and load it again, everything will be exactly as it was, when you were saving it, trust me! :ugeek:
If you need me to try and explain this in greater detail, just let me know! ;)

Also, have a look at the INFO thread for Saving Formats and choices!

Re: Why does reopening project have degraded look?

Okay, thanks for the ideas.

What I refer to here is saving and reopening .vrv, not png.
I save the .vrv, then after that I save as .png.
When I reopen a project, I am opening the .vrv.

These are the exact steps to recreate the degraded look problem consistently here:

Open Verve
Create these settings: (may or may not be relevant to the problem)
Fluidity: 100
Red: 70
Green: 40
Blue: 60
Brush size: 100
Buildup: 100
Bump: 100

Then with one continuous brushstroke, scribble for about 15 seconds to build it all up nice and thick.

Then I save as test.vrv
Then I close Verve.
Then I.....

Oh...aha...I see...

The degraded look consistently happens when I click on a .vrv file that I have associated in Windows with
"C:\Program Files\Verve_painter\Verve_painter.exe"

....but when I open Verve first, then click load button to load the .vrv, all is well.

Interesting. Okay, just wanted to let you know.

Thanks for any other ideas.
And thanks for the welcome to the forum.
Amazing program. I'm so happy that you share it. What a gift! I love it.

Re: Why does reopening project have degraded look?

Okay, a little bit more information to work with.

After some tests I thought you may like to know

This file loads fine from within Verve, and by clicking on a Verve associated .vrv file
here

Whereas this file loads fine from within Verve only, and shows what I happen to be calling for now
a degraded look when I open it by clicking on its .vrv file
here

Not really a problem now, since I just need to load vrv from within Verve,
but a convenience to sometimes just click on a vrv to open a project.
Thanks for any ideas.

Re: Why does reopening project have degraded look?

I have something far more annoying on my system, where associating files won't work properly at all. I have to check what's going on there?!
Thanks for pointing me that way, frew! I really didn't think about it for a long time. Strange stuff sometimes. :PP

Anyway, GREAT! Very good feedback! :ob

Re: Why does reopening project have degraded look?

Download it again, frew! I believe, I've solved it!
I also found out what my trouble was on my system. Windows is really stupid, really! :tantrum: ...I had my files associated with an older version in a different folder. However, it had the same name. So even when I was browsing for the new version and set that, it would just go "OH, YEAH, I GOT THAT ONE ALREADY, COOL!" and just ignore what I chose.
I had to go into the Registry to change that manually. Now it works fine for me, too!

Anyway, YAY! Problem solved. :ugeek:

Ooooh, I should add a BIG APOLOGY  ...when I ran debug and tested it with that version (...which windows allowed me to do, because it had a new filename, duh!), I saw exactly what was happening to you, too. I have no explanation for why that was, other than that it skipped some vital initialization that I added years later. Now it takes that into account and it all works well! So, yeah, you were not crazy... :? and I wasn't thinking that AT ALL! :hihi:

Here's to fixes and great feedback:

What a joy! :bounce:
(first time I ever used a smiley.)
Thank you so much for looking into this, and for finding and implementing the solution.
I'm having so much fun with the program.
Thanks again!
