Re: Watch me grow! : Mary's Sketchbook

THANK YOU everyone!!!

Today I played around with some stuff... not really sure I like the result, especially because I couldn't recreate the effect from the top ball to the one on the bottom, like I wanted... so not sure what I did (or didn't do).

Re: Watch me grow! : Mary's Sketchbook

Keep playing with it, not to recreate, but just to create. You will gain more and more understanding about what happens when you do what, you know. I know how tempting it is and how painful it is, when something surprises you and you wish to be able to do the same thing again. However, it's always a mixture out of how dry the paint is versus the amount of fluidity and, well, all those other factors, too, but those are most significant, when it comes to the sense of texture it can create, as you spread paint. Applying fresh paint always applies wetness and the buildup amount you choose also has an affect on how the paint on the canvas behaves, because if you add a lot, it will behave differently than with less. Sometimes you want to erase paint down, just to decrease the amount of it on the canvas, not to erase it all the way down to the canvas.
Anyway...keep playing, there are no mistakes and there's nothing that helps you become an even greater master than simply making more experiences!

Love the style! c:!

Re: Watch me grow! : Mary's Sketchbook

Today's painting. After finishing it, I realized I should... uhh... excuse me... COULD have made the sun in a more orange spot, but oh well...
I wasn't really sure (anymore) how to get a water effect, so I did what I could. Water doesn't look very 3D, I know (in that all the "waves" are the same size) and the mountains look like they're reflecting in still water, but the waves show it as choppy... not trying to tear it down, just critiquing my own work haha!
Critiques welcome!

Nice done, but the sun should be a bit brighter, did you have used reference image, or is this out of your brain, or can you paint mobile (with laptop)?
I like the color palette and the water/reflections.

Re: Watch me grow! : Mary's Sketchbook

It has a very surreal touch, which is kind of interesting in itself! There's a nervousness in the sky, which is reflected in character by the water's motion. BUT, give yourself a tiny moment and it begins to feel like you're sitting on a boat, that has just stopped it's engines to take a look at the beautiful scenery. The waves come from the boat and you know that just a few more seconds and they will have spread across the lake, becoming tiny little ripples, which in yet another few seconds become as calm as the reflections of the hills still suggest. It does not look "wrong", but more like a great capture of a very special snapshot in time!
But, yeah, try taking the sun out altogether and I can imagine it will look just right again! I don't know, if it even needs anything there, but...hmmm...makes me want to try something. But I don't want to mess around in your gallery thread.
Anyway, I think, you underestimate how well you've done here again. And I love to watch you grow, making all these experiences, showing your beautiful instincts and also beautiful insecurities that show just how much you enjoy this becoming! c:!
