As we talked a lot about puppet programs as posing reference here, I found a extremely interesting add on for blender.
http://www.manuelbastioni.com/guide_manuellab_index.php

I tried this yesterday and it is very promising.
Developed for quick rigged character creation, it has a lot of features.
Maybe some of you know Mixamo or Autodesk character creator. It's a bit similar but without clothing so far.
Very interesting for painting reference is the pose tool and that it is fully integrated in blender.
This makes it to a few clicks solution.
BUT! You can also select from pretty much body presets to end up with posing presets and finally you can fine tune it, if you want.
Starting with the overall character -bigger nose, longer legs......to fine tuning the pose.

I guess this version hooks up on some other already done add ons.
Worth to look at.

Pilou mentioned it before but since then the GREASE PENCIL in blender really made big steps forward.
Now including a lot of sculpting tools:

Full rigging

Some nice presets

And a overall good looking future. It really has tendencies to become a 2D Animation workhorse.

This is not Software - but cool for 2D Artist's too - check sketchfab. Today I was found this nice 3D Modell - you don't need to use 3D Software, you can use it with Firefox and with the flashplugin

There are thousands of nice 3D models.
