Extrapolations

Verve is a strange little program. I am liking it better than my sketch pad pro which I bought just before I found out about Verve. This time as opposed to my first doodle I went in knowing more about program. I decided that since I was never a traditional painter I would attempt to finish an old 3d Bryce project (Where's My Shoe?) by doing a paint over. I should have known better but what the hell? Knowing more about the program doesn't take precedence over familiarity :D That takes time and lots of sketches as you would sketch in Sculptris or Zbrush.

Not achieving what I wanted ( I am not giving up on Where's My Shoe?) I hit symmetry and started playing with some of the colors in the original and that's how this turned into The Unexpected. Not great but a lot of fun

damn fine project Taron!

Re: Expect the Unexpected

Cool! 8-)
I like "where's my shoe!" quite a lot...looks very authentic aquarelle in a curious way.
The Unexpected is cute! :D

It sure takes some time to get into the groove, but even then there's such vast amount of potential for different styles and ways to deal with all parameters that it easily rivals the challenges of real media.

Re: Expect the Unexpected

hehe thx. Wheres My Shoe was done back in (gulps) 2000 in Bryce and Photoshop. I don't believe I ever posted this but it's unfinished. That's why I would love painting it over in verve. Seems like a good way to acquaint myself with painting techniques. My art teacher let me pretty much do what I wanted and that was sculpting and occasional sketches. I sucked at painting

Anyhow here is what happens when you try and learn how to control fluid at 100 % Drying off, listening to Stanley Clarke's old School days album and drinking Corona with lime lol

The second one looks like a camera down someone's throat! Very interesting! :D
The first one looks also exactly like what you'd do with a coffee and phone call, haha! ...loads of fun either way! :D

Re: Expect the Unexpected

A throat? Ack! Here is what I saw and it has become a fun exercise. I finally have my old bamboo working as it should. I don't usually use my tablet anyway even in Sculptris and it has been hard forcing myself to use it. I have used a mouse since 96 for sketching in photoshop. Talk about shaking up my routine but I am becoming more comfy with it. I am using a Logitech G 13 with my left hand and am still using my Key profile that I set up for Sculptris ie shift, ctrl, alt, spacebar and keys like g, f for flatten, ctrl z,[,], etc. Is there a way of inverting an image in Verve? I took the throat to Photoshop to invert. Once I imported back from Photoshop. I had a better idea of what I wanted to do in Verve. Sometimes when I look at a symmetrical image I see things like I see when I am looking at a piece of wood to carve. I am applying the same thought process to the Throat and certainly could do a lot more with him (so yes unfinished) but here is what I am finding. I am Still at 100 % fluidity and drying off. With my tablet (doh lol) and the brush at insanely large size and of course back down, the shading can be incredibly delicate. Bringing out forms from the "wood" becomes more of a flow, the gentle nudge of a diffuse blade and so much more intuitive than photoshop and a mere mouse lol The only flaw I saw was somewhere in the process and at the very bottom and on the hoodie type thing framing the face at the top I picked up color? Maybe I typoed it in and that would be par for the course :D WIP!

Re: Expect the Unexpected

Thx DM :) I am hoping that when I am done it will be more of a portrait of sorts than an abstract. Not that I am opposed to color http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread ... infinite=1 (second image) I tend to overdo color. I am more comfy sketching black and white. Let me find my feet and I will go color later :D Here is what I am doing. I may have too many layers in it lol, On the right is the inverse. It will take a lot more work to get what I really want out of it. Disregard the default color wheel I am working b and w

Re: Expect the Unexpected

Uh, nice. i tend to like the less figural more.

About colours. One of verve magic features are "smudge chroma". It's a knob up in the UI.
The same function which let a B&W picture suddenly get some magenta etc. Really does suprisingly magical things with abstract like colouring.
Saying this just to point out, that a later colouring could miss that magic a bit.

Anyway as you have seen, I realy like B&W ;)

Re: Expect the Unexpected

Thanks Knacki that helps a lot. I had to rotate the eye in photoshop and desaturate . Still a lot more I could do here but I think I am done for now. Thx taron for such a fun program. I suspect drying was on at a very low rate. I am not quite getting the shading results I had before. But I think I can find it easily enough (<<<<< starts hunting through all the project saves) sheesh I save too many iterations but saving is a Good thing :D
