Re: Zeropainter - GFX

After all these crits - zero almost none in this forum is planing so complex scenes as you do.
And it is super difficult.
YOU ARE DOING GREAT in this!
Seeing your overall progress is just a question of time until you will outperform the great masters :D ;) Well, maybe some of them.

Btw. I have been to a conference last year and saw two different talks. One about outstanding short "Piper" from Pixar by Ecik Smitt, one about light as a storytelling part of shows.
Both started with the old masters. Both named caravaggio

As you are brave enough to do such complex scenes, maybe you wanna look a bit at those old arrangements.
Something I also want to do, but never did, is inverse storyboarding. Looking at a movie you like and make storyboard pictures for it. There are some unbelievable good compositions to discover ;)

Re: Zeropainter - GFX

Yes Zero,
keep in mind, Knacki n Taron advices about color n proportions, that thing about the eye been too pushed outward is perceptible also in your previous dogs painting.
if you look for the truth n realness in painting, you are getting closer at each step man, but take into account that it's a long road,
but also notice that you can return to your previous paintings months later and see things with other perspective n upgrade them.

I would advice, that if you want to gain the ability to see more color variations on skin, please do natural painting studies w models.
sometimes photos can't just capture all the richness of color shifting that a human eye can see in natural conditions,
imho, then once you gain that you'll be able to see the color shifting even a in photo reference despite they may lack that hue richness.

keep it up man, congrats,

Re: Zeropainter - GFX

Hey, thanks for your comments and your tipps :ob - you are right, my eyes and my skin color could be bit better. On White Skins you can add some blue/green and gray on the forehead and on the chin - just a little bit. And with layers - see the Borodante Tutorial - I use only 1-3 layers in Verve ;) - normal layer and sometimes extra highlights and extra shadows. if I like my result - I allways merge down. But Often it also great to have a seperate layer/groups for Background, Middleground and Foreground. But because of performance - I can not handle too much layers like in photohop. But also in photoshop i dont use too much layers.

By the way - Boros tutorial reminds me on Matt kohrs Tutorials about DIRECT PAINTING (one layer) and INDIRECT PAINTING (MultiLayers) - last one is better for beginners / or for colordesign - first one is better if you are very good with colors/values. Thumbnails also very good - before you begin.

Re: Zeropainter - GFX

Keep in mind, Verve allows for a very different philosophy than ordinary digital painters. It's just a process of adjusting your habits. What happens in standard paint apps such as photoshop and the likes, is that one gets progressively stiffer and stiffer, working overly careful with layers and transforms and all those tools that turn it rather into a kind of construction than a painting. In Verve you best begin to free yourself, don't think in terms possible mistakes, very much like you would do in actual painting. You work with the substance of your painting, not with the construction of layered elements.
You can absolutely employ traditional procedures. That includes actually making a sketch in a different layer, but then all your painting itself can and actually should happen in one layer. It will free yourself, as much as you may not believe it right now. But once you recognize the liberation you will experience, it will activate different layers of your consciousness and with much greater ease will you create much more coherent paintings- nay- masterpieces!
c:!
Also, when you listen to advice such as "make something more gray" or something like that, be careful, because that's not the kind of advice that gives you understanding. If anything, this might lock you into unconscious patterns, procedures without awareness of why you would do such a thing. As a result you will not be able to deal with different situations, such as different light colors or even different types of skin, for example. Instead you must become aware of what you want to achieve. I was giving you already some hints in regards to the nature of skin (tissue thickness, layers beneath the skin tissue) and the nature of lighting and bounce lighting. Become deeply aware of translucency as well and you will really begin to know what you're doing. The more you understand, the better you can study, too, by looking at actual substances, people and so on. You will notice details, which totally escaped you earlier.
Work with your mind! Do not just absorb any "paint by number" information! Become aware!

Re: Zeropainter - GFX

Ok, but I mean only a very very bit of gray, blue, green etc. and very very thin. There is an nice YU CHENG Head Tutorial. This Tutorial is very nice - okay I watched only the first minutes* ... https://gumroad.com/yuchenghong

* I have to watch and to 'repeat' maybe much much more tutorials too.

I did paint & draw a lot - last year, but I didn't spend time for watching tutorials.

Re: Zeropainter - GFX

My teacher always told me: "Only draw what you see." Simply said, most difficult to execute.
A very good one sentence tutorial.

Re: Zeropainter - GFX

If you add "Learn to see" to it, then it would be more complete, I think. ;)

Re: Zeropainter - GFX

If you could forgive me for being such a stubborn Zero...
Is great that you seek tuts n info about other people painting process,
but imho for every hour of tuts or googling a fineart school studient does, he should be doing four times live session models n landscape nature, or even better both
think of the old masters, they were doing these amazing masterpieces long before fb, utube, etc, back then there were only books.
they studied the effects of light from nature, the human body mechanisms from life itself, etc.
"They were sons of nature cuz they studied directly from it, n all nature belonged to them, as it belongs to us today"
I always say myself, go out n claim it.

Re: Zeropainter - GFX

Yes you are all right - best study are real things / old masters :ob - but I think also good photos and movies - as reference - can be good to. I'm also a fan of Sigma created photos - the Foveon Chip is great https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foveon_X3_sensor. Maybe its subjectively perceived - but I think Sigma DP2/DP1 / Sigma Quattro / and newer one Sigma Merill and their SD DSLR's can create the best colors & values :ob

I onw old DP2s and DP1s ...

Re: Zeropainter - GFX

from live you can move around the model, to see how really is in 3d what you are perceiving in 2d, this apply to contours, shades, n colors
that been said, it would be great to see those kind of photos you mentioned Zero, good luck, n congrats again.
