I've wondered about this recent versions. I noticed that when I convert each painted layer to canvas, we have use from new ability of new textures. new styles and custom patterns ... new events in texture in version U27/U28 ...
Number 9 is coordinated perfectly with her canvas and with every change creates an elegant style.
I just used brush 9 for my pencil textures : dry with low or half buildup and toggle of W & E.
and for canvas i used brushe 6 / 9 in the liquid phase / brush 2 with big Bristles. maybe bigger patterns and brushes are better for canvas making. i used for coarse texture and a subtle gradient.
Easier than something that looks interesting and the answers provided.

sometimes canvas texture ~= layer bump and we can compose them.
a simple paint with brush 6 for canvas and a simple brush 9 for pencil texture ... all is easy T*
sometimes use warp and fluidity and multibrushes for a 3d mask for painting
other layer with same state ...
