Useable on Windows Tablet?

Hi everyone,
As this is my first post I would just like to take one second to say I think Verve looks incredible, and Taron I think what you are doing is fantastic.

I am pretty much all in the "mac" world so I have not been able to try Verve yet, but I watch all the youtube updates and I can't wait to try it.
I am thinking of buying some sort of tablet, and until recently I just planned on it being an ipad. But then I wondered, if I were to buy a Windows Surface tablet, would I be able to use Verve well on that? I see that it is very dependent on a good graphics card to run smoothly, and as far as I can tell the windows surface tablets don't even have a dedicated graphics chip.
The Surface 2 (non-pro)'s processor is an NVIDIA chip, so maybe that would help? However, I don't even know if Verve would run on Windows RT...
If not a windows surface, is there another tablet that you would recommend for Verve?

Thanks!

Adam

Re: Useable on Windows Tablet?

Hey Adam, THANKS, first of all!
Thus far I have no recommendation for a tablet, because the only one I know is the Cintiq Companion and it annoys the heck out of me, hehe. I'd love to try a surface 2 pro, but this sort of stuff will have to wait until Verve can develop a spending budget, pfff... ...but then I'm planning on going for all the major platforms with it. :bounce:

You can, however, get bootcamp to run windows on your mac and if it has a decent graphics card, it should run just fine from what I've heard. :geek:

Anyway, WELCOME to the forum and THANKS again! :D

Re: Useable on Windows Tablet?

Thanks for the advice Taron!

Well last night I went to the mall and they were selling Microsoft Surface 3 Pro tablets with a 30-day return policy. I went ahead and bought the i5 model with 4GB of RAM (that would be the top of my budget if I were to keep it).

I am sorry to report it isn't really there yet... response (mainly of the pen) was so sluggish it was not useable. Basically with the pen, I had to hold it against the screen for about a full second before the cursor would "catch up" and start the brushstroke. Also, generally the lag on the cursor, once in the stroke, was rather extreme, and sampling of the stroke seemed like maybe it was low (curved strokes were somewhat "angular"). It's too bad because I loved playing with the paint effects even so... it just wasn't a practical hardware environment for your awesome software! Hopefully someday :) In the mean time I'm going to go with an ipad and the apps that are available in that world.

I also tried the Verve using just my finger and the performance was somewhat better but still not really something you'd want to work with.

When I finally have access to my desktop machine again next year, I will try out bootcamp and then I will finally be able to use your awesome program as it's meant to be experienced! Can't wait!!

Take care and thanks again for sharing Verve with us!

Ah, that's a pity, I was curious about the surface pro thingy. I'm a little surprised that they industry yet has to come up with a powerful tablet...or agree to release one. The ipad supposedly has a pretty decent GL performance, so...one of these days I may have a go at that, too.

Anyway, thanks for your compliments and I'll be happy to welcome you back! :)

re: trying on the ipad;

I don't know anything about openGL or programming so please take this with a grain of salt, but I think it might be a great fit... My iphone 4 from 5 years ago runs autodesk's fluidFX app flawlessly... I realize your software has so much more depth than that app, but even so, I imagine if an iphone that old can smoothly run a 2d fluid simulation that well, a new ipad (which they claim has about 80x as much gfx processing power) might have the resources you need possibly?

(not to mention you would have a totally unique and top-of-the-line offering in the iOS marketplace, which could potentially be very much worth your time and effort) ;)

Yeah, I feel that way, too! I can't wait to get at that, too. But first I have to have time to do it and I'm currently too darn busy. But it's really pretty high up on my list of things to do. I think, this could totally help with funding, too. While the iphone app would be a commercial product, I'd keep the desktop version free...so any mobile version could be the means to "donate", so to say. Feels like a good plan to me. :)
