Re: Inspirations (for artists to paint!)
as long as you have fun you shouldn't be ashamed of your explorations!

I recognized in 1st picture (people) many spatially exact similarities with reference photo, but didn't want to push it further as I was not sure that maybe i.e. you opened photo in some paint program and played with it.

The program is pretty good as it recognizes features (shapes) in photo and apply various filters, with various degree on them, to create as they call it abstract painting. See how they preserve edges of greater contrast for "painting" to be recognizable. I bet similar filters in PS are available decades ago.

I think it mainly showcase their knowledge of image processing i.e. OpenCV (maybe they even contributed to the library?) and proved some psychological principle [Berlyne 1971] which states that "abstract arts are often characterized by their greater perceptual ambiguities than photographs, which tend to invoke moderate mental efforts of the audience for interpretation, accompanied with subtle aesthetic pleasures". Huh, Isn't this insulting lol?

As for that program is better than you.....?
I think you or I or anyone else could be far far better than this just to little focus on what is abstract art.
Let's see how Cezanne done it.
Here is simple read which mention Cezanne's use of "flat depth" technique which he used to abstract representations of color and shapes he saw.
Another piece of information is an excerpt from pdf I found on net:
[His was an intellectual and intuitive approach, which led to an impression of flat depth
Flatness, by use of his bold colours and firm strokes; depth, by means of tone and the use of warmer or cooler colours, and by his use of detail. Cooler colours tend to predominate for distance, while warmer colours and detail increase in the middle and foreground. Since the placement of each colour was so important to the composition, Cézanne would sometimes stand "for a quarter of an hour or more, staring at the canvas without touching it".]
It's interesting to see how little written information can be found about his abstractions.

But his findings and contribution lead to abstract modern art we know (cubism, futurism, symbolism etc.).
Or we could go further back and said that Petroglyphs are first abstract art humans ever created?

As for computer to simulate art after art or abstract art I believe we will wait for some time, at least for "Human Brain Project" to succeeds and then for some time more.
btw. EU funded it with 1 billion euros for 10 years period I believe.
But yes, it is great achievement for computers, especially for computer vision branch to be able to recognize faces, weapons etc. from still images (videos) in real time. But to make abstract art of it....
