Re: Dev Diary

Haha, THANKS, Stavros! I couldn't agree more! ;)
Yes, I keep thinking about exactly all of that! My design idea for the new interface actually revolves around usability on a tablet. Maybe I can finally have some good times with the Cintiq companion, you know...boy do I hate this thing. So, yeah, I absolutely agree and have that in mind for sure.
The major trick will be to spare the artist redundant complexity, but still have it available in some fashion. In some regards that means I have to make plenty of decisions for the artists first, but give them a chance to dive deeper, if so desired.
When I worked with Nanonation to create this wonderful first Verve device for the Joslyn Museum in Nebraska, Verve got stripped down all the way, only offering 3 tool choices (paintbrush, squeegee and a bucket), with a simple color pallet. There was something liberating about this, but I would never go that minimal, actually. However, I will try to kind of "split the difference", see if I can have a really simple surface access, but then all you to turn it over, so to say...noodle on all available details, hehe.
However, I don't want to go for a "simulation" pretense, you know, but rather pursue Verve by its nature. I'm not entirely sure what this means, just yet, hahahaha, but it'll come to me. For example, I would not want to offer a "paint brush", if it doesn't really act like one. That's a strange little thing that has always annoyed the heck out of me in each and every painter out there. You see this "pretty" icon of a paint brush and end up getting some kind of blobby thing to paint with. I rather offer a "blobby thing" then, so it's clear right from the start... :?
But MUCH rather I'd offer a really nice paint brush, if you so choose to use one, hehe. :) :ugeek:

In a way, what I'm saying is that I keep it true to itself by having terms and "icons" that reflect the tool you want to pick for what it is. At least I think I will.

Ahhhh, I'm still angry at "procreate", because literally a month before that came out some 14 years ago or so... I suggested this name to our gang at StationXstudios for what later became "messiah" (still hate that name). Actually, Fred Tepper claimed to have made that suggestion, too, hehe, only confirming that it was an awesome name. And then...puff...a giant billboard with it popped up. DOH!
I have never seen the app, though. I should go have a look, maybe...I also don't want to be too influenced and then get accused for plagiarism or so. That would really make me ashamed. :|

Re: Dev Diary

While it is poetic…..There is no patent on good simple interface design. :)
MOI
I was giddy with pleasure at the MOI interface when I saw it…nurds can be unruly but every single function including numerical input is available through the pen tablet…as its author intended. The solution to how to make variable selections during operations is equally clever.
PROCREATE
Although procreate does not do volume(bump) or anything nearly as complex as veer…. it certainly has some beautiful brushes.
Again these options are broken down in a very easy to understand workflow.
BLENDER
Blender 3d by contrast is " a dogs breakfast" LOL…I use it a lot…. but IT IS BRUTAL! even after the rewrite!
But I will say this about blender. The scale, rotate, move functions with xyz are super consistent across the entire interface…including graphs and graphics and everything…this consistency is brilliant.

Re: Dev Diary

Ehehe, yeah, MoI looks very NEAT, indeed! ...nice!
As to procreate, hmmm...I have a love/hate relationship to this design, leaning a little towards hate, though. It doesn't feel inviting to me and keeps the mind torn with choices, hard to focus on.
Naturally, I wanted to have a sample stroke, too, while I thought about letting the artist do one sample stroke and then settings show what changes happen. That way it would be much rather a WYSIWYG type of thing, you know. Also, I would never want to show more than one stroke...maybe two for a compare, I don't know.
I'm a little relieved, because it gives me- once more- license to invent, so to say. I enjoy that very much! :D

THANK YOU for posting those, though, that's awesome! It's kinda nice to have a quick orientation like that. Great! :ob

Re: Dev Diary

Oh dear, oh dear... I'm making a whole bunch of changes, really.
I'm still trying to figure out how to best arrange it all, but I'm trying to make it as logical as possible. For example, Canvas Show will now toggle the visibility of it, not whether it's active or not. But I'm thinking about making that a parameter instead, so you can have independent visibility and strength. [t] however will continue to toggle canvas on/off. But really, it will toggle between two states you can set...eh...we shall see. Loads of thoughts, but working seriously with it will reveal what's most comfortable.
I'll also see that I hook up some geometric restraints such as lines, circles, this sort of stuff. Probably lines first. Thanks for reminding me, Zero! ;)

Re: Dev Diary

Yeah I would always start with License to invent versus, "what did the others do well?"

I don't have any IOS hardware so I haven't had any time with any apps like procreate. Though I'm a bit uneasy with two columns of brush stroke previews but that does lessen the brush list you have to scroll through. It will be interesting what you come up with the mindset for tablets or even the recent trend of the phablets (I'm kind of foaming at the mouth for a Note 4. Maybe.)

It will be tricky since on Desktop, I just learn as much of the hotkeys that will get me flying. On my tablet, I love apps where the UI goes away and I have the whole canvas to myself. What you have with verve is very well done. I just use blend, erase, color picker and brush size. Everything else is minor. I don't need to switch brushes. So you can tuck the rest somewhere.

It sucks on the Android end where Sketchbook is still the all around best but just enough of an annoyance with the interface. It's great to pin down the Brush and color swatches. I need access for those two but sadly haven't found an app that provides quick access to brush size. Artflow has such good brushstrokes and speed. But they tuck everything into two drawers, and than under rows of categories, AND THAN a list for each category. My concentration is broken when I want to continue where I left off.

And I like how you mention the word Liberating. I'm finding myself pursuing that more lately. The recent vector note apps have been great... if I ever get back to them  Just being able to select the pen tool and just draw has an odd satisfaction even though I'm getting very basic options.

But I am so glad you have the consideration for this to be on tablets. :ob If this can be as buttery smooth as I get on desktop or at least smooth or smoother than Artflow, than I would be a very happy customer. Maybe one day someone creates a 22x28 inch tablet/tablet pc, put it on an easel, start up a stream, and paint happy trees with Verve.

On a side note, I don't why but Verve makes me not worry about pixel size. On Photoshop, I tend to be generous on the pixel density so that I don't run into the problem of, "Oh shoot, it's blurry." I find it an odd setup of extending the sides to expand the canvas but opening a window to decide the numbers on how big the canvas is becomes jarring to me.

(Silly idea: slightly tilt the tablet to play around with the light :P)

Re: Dev Diary

Yep Moi's UI is some amazing! (I have made the French UI and some other things for it!
But not only the UI is streamly fine but also the ergonomy of the functions! :ugeek:
It's the little brother of Rhino and functions in Moi just need one manipulation, in Rhino you need 3 manipulations!!! :ob
Of course I am fan of it! Look my little videos (sorry in French but very visual!

Is beautiful that please without concept!
