TexRD, to make reaction-diffusion (tileable) patterns :

http://www.texrd.com/

Image
The site is mainly in french but you will find a version and manual in english :
http://www.texrd.com/readme_english.txt

Abstract :
"TexRD software allows animated random textures to be generated
by means of algorithms based on reaction-diffusion principle.
More specifically, complex chemical reactions between several fluids
are simulated and produce various patterns by self-organization.
Similar morphogenesis phenomena (spontaneous build-up of shapes) are
observed in the real life and could account for the patterns observed
on the skin on some animals, exotic fishes, shells, minerals..."

2D gallery :
http://www.texrd.com/gallerie/gallerie.html

And used as texture for covering 3D virtual objects:

Re: What's your favourite LowBudget, Freeware, OpenSource Pr

The topic of patterns on animals reminds me of a very old revelation of mine that cats and dogs have volume patterns! They actually seem to go straight through them, which is why striped cats, for example, have spots on their bellies! How all this works is quite fascinating to ponder over, I find! :geek:

Neat, Gbo! Thanks for sharing! :ob

Re: Inspirations (for artists to paint!)

[Note : This post comes from the Inspiration thread, in which I tried to prove to Zen that a small image (let’s say 100 X 100 pixels) selected from hundreds of images of Google News, could serve as a reference for artistic paintings. The selection of the thumbnails is done so that the small image “works” well to the eye, in spite of its poor definition. And even more, the poor definition is an advantage because it leaves more room for the imagination, hence artistic derivation.]

No problem, it's good to talk with you :D
And now I found a tool to illustrate

From this miniature image selected from random daily news :
Image

...any painter could easily derive something like this :
Image

The advantage of the method is that the reference image has very few information, but the good one because it was selected amongst one hundred images to work well for the eye just like that, at 100x100 pixels, hence without needing details.
A seasoned artist can omit details from a detailed reference when he wants for the best painterly results, but it is more difficult for beginners like me.

Thanks! It's good to talk with you too! :D
Good one! :ob
Yes, a general idea is to catch essentials from good reference (whether shapes, rhythm, atmosphere, color etc.) and then free yourself in interpretation!
I found one needs to know subject he paints very well in order to simplify it but still remaining convincingly painted.

Re: Inspirations (for artists to paint!)

For the "painting" above, I used an experimental automatic painter program called "Sisley the Abstract Painter" :
http://www.stat.ucla.edu/~mtzhao/research/sisley/ (see the tab called "Software")
I should be ashamed but I have a lot of fun !

Other examples :
From this 100x100 image from today's news:
Image
I get this scary character :

--
From this one:

I get this dreamy scene:

--
And from this one, again only 100x100 px:
Image
Look at that, this is what I saw in the first place, by lack of definition of the thumbnail :

At least my little theory is illustrated now ! :D
